For Halon / Hadron / Hedron, I sought to slow down and intentionally, unhurriedly inhabit moments and sounds, deliberately suspending change to let textures and themes develop spontaneously. As a guitarist, it’s natural to want to play dynamically, rhythmically, even percussively, and I’ve done that and enjoy it and will do it again. But for these songs, I wanted to step away from that mode. There are plenty of guitars, however. I also made use of a secret weapon of sorts: a couple years ago I got a Red Panda Raster pedal. At its core it’s a delay, but it’s also so much more. I’ve been using it non-stop – it’s tough not to layer it into nearly everything.
The songs on Halon / Hadron / Hedron embody change – they began life in the fading afternoon light of the forest and found themselves completed in a cityscape. They encapsulate the feelings of loss for a beloved home along with hope for the future. There’s a flux of sorts happening all around – from the fluid, spectral drones of mellotrons, celestes, and organs that form the billowing, gaseous cores to the slowly strummed guitar chords and occasional Raster-ized* leads that echo into the cosmos. Layered wind chimes, ghostly vibraphones, and retro inspired synth melodies round out the melodic contours – pushing the narrative forward that things will be better on the other side.
